Get inspired, master new gardening practices, and develop your ability to make your dream garden a reality! Tune into this week’s class or the rest of the 8-Thursday series to learn from local experts in diverse botanical, cultural, and practical gardening fields. 


WHAT’S HAPPENING IN GARDENING Winter 2018

8 Thursdays / 9:30am – 12:00 noon / Palm Room – $140 for the series or $25 per class / Reservations or you may pay at the door. Information and registration: 626-821-4623 or ted.tegart@arboretum.org. Each class begins with an open discussion which may or may not include: show & tell, current events, culture tips, pest problems, and introductions of new plants. The class will also include lectures or hands-on workshops from the following speakers. All classes in this series are eligible for Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) and UC Master Gardener Continuing Education Units.

January 18 Rose Care, with Jill Morganelli

Winter is the time to prune your roses to look their best for Spring. Learn the techniques for creating beautiful and healthy rose bushes from the Arboretum’s own Jill Morganelli, Senior Curator. She will demonstrate her “mantra” method as she prunes in the Rose Garden. This class is a great opportunity for anyone who missed Jill’s famous “Rose Pruning” class, or anyone looking to ensure that their roses bloom beautifully in 2018. (2.5 APLD CEU Credits)

January 25 How The LA County Arboretum Changed My Life, with Christopher Nyerges

Christopher Nyerges is the author of 10 books, including Self-Sufficient Home, How to Survive Anywhere, Enter the Forest, and Guide to Wild Foods. He was the editor of Wilderness Way magazine for 7 years. Christopher will share how his interest in Ethnobotany got sparked at the Arboretum working with Dr. Enari, who helped him write his first book. (2.5 APLD CEU Credits)

February 1 Field Trip: Private Garden in Pasadena, with David Le & Family

David Le has been an avid plant lover for years and a long-time member of numerous plant clubs. As a gift to his parents, he completely re-built the landscape of their house with the plants he had learned about in his plant club experience. (2.5 APLD CEU Credits)

February 8 The Family Geraniaceae, with Manny Rivera

Manny Rivera will cover the history and discovery of the family Geraniaceae and bring in plants from his personal collection to show. He has been a member of San Gabriel Valley Cactus and Succulent Society for 23 years and the Show Chairman for the last 13 years. He was also a past President of the LA Geranium Society for 4 years. (2.5 APLD CEU Credits)

February 15 Gardener Profile, with Timothy Moynahan

Timothy Moynahan is celebrating his 13th anniversary at the Arboretum today. Over the years, he has cared for Tallc Knoll, the Palm, and Bamboo sections. Currently, he maintains the Prehistoric Forest. Timothy brings a well-rounded life experience to his work having been an accomplished trumpet player traveling all over the world with the ska band, The Untouchables. This is the first of a new series, where we will visit with Arboretum employees and learn what they do on an annual and quarterly basis to maintain their sections.(1.25 APLD CEU Credits)

February 22 Orchid Curator, with Julie Norman

Julie Norman has been the Orchid Curator for the Arboretum for 30 years. She will lead a tour of the Tropical Greenhouse, and offer an exclusive tour of the Orchid Greenhouse that is not open to the public. She will also share her culture tips and practices for working with Orchids. (1.25 APLD CEU Credits)

March 1 Spring Gardening in Southern California, with Yvonne Savio

Yvonne will discuss photos from her Pasadena garden of what to plant now to enjoy through summer, including last cool-weather plantings as well as first warm-weather plantings. Yvonne Savio is the former head of the UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program. http://www.gardeninginla.net/ (2.5 APLD CEU Credits)
