Vegetable oil spill shuts road

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Feb. 20 – Feb. 26, 2011. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, February 20 At 6:37 p.m., Rescue Ambulance 105 and one unit from the Monrovia Fire Department responded to a medical assist on the bus bench in front of 5401 Peck Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a female patient with a chief complaint of a fever and headache for the past 12 hours. Patient was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, February 21 At 3:22 p.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Battalion 105, and the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 00 block of Hidden Valley Road in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three story residential structure with the garage fully involved with fire, and smoke throughout the living quarters. Arcadia fire personnel assisted with fire attack, rapid intervention crew (RIC), and incident safety officer. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Monrovia Fire Department.

Tuesday, February 22 At 8:32 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of East Lemon Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered a 40-year-old patient demonstrating signs and symptoms of a stroke. Fire personnel provided advanced life support at the scene and transported the patient to the nearest Los Angeles County Department of Health Services approved stroke center for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, February 23 At 9:03 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1800 block of Seventh Place. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a young male patient who was suffering from a moderate head laceration caused from a trip and fall. The patient received basic life support treatment at the scene, including direct pressure, and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, February 24

  1. At 1:20 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 106, Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of West Olive Avenue in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire personnel found two fully involved garage fires with extension to three other residential structures. Arcadia fire personnel battled the fire by advancing hose lines for extinguishment, performing roof top vertical ventilation, and conducting extensive salvage and overhaul operations. Arcadia Fire resources were released to their home stations while Monrovia Fire personnel investigated the cause of the fire.

  2. At 5:52 p.m., E107 and RA 105 responded to an oil spill in the intersection of East Colorado Boulevard and North Second Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a traffic accident involving two vehicles, one of them transporting a number of 55-gallon drums of used vegetable oil. Multiple drums had spilled onto the street, releasing the contents down the gutter and into the Los Angeles County Flood Control Basin. Due to the quantity of oil spilled, fire personnel requested Los Angeles County Health Haz Mat and Los Angeles County Flood Control to respond to the incident to assist with the cleanup of the oil. Additionally, the California Emergency Management Agency was notified, as the amount of oil spilled fell within the California Clean Water Act. The Arcadia Public Works Department was called to the scene to coordinate the cleanup operation. Approximately 40 bags of absorbent, multiple personnel, a street sweeping truck and a vacuum truck were utilized to recover the spilled oil and water mixture out of the flood control system. Assisting agencies were informed that the absorbent could be disposed of in any landfill, as it was not a hazardous material. Once the life safety hazard was abated and all notifications made to the appropriate agencies, the scene was released to Los Angeles County Health Haz Mat and the Arcadia Police Department.

Friday, February 25 At 1:04 p.m., Rescue Ambulance 105 came upon a person in need of assistance in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was suffering from frontal head pain as a result of an altercation with a loss prevention officer. The patient received basic life support measures at the scene, including direct pressure. The patient refused further treatment or transportation to a local hospital and was released to the Arcadia Police Department.

Saturday, February 26 At 1:48 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male sitting in a chair with slurred speech and right side facial droop. Fire Personnel treated this patient with advanced life support medication and transported him to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 447 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 12 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports. It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
