Underground vault explosion

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 11-17, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

At 4:19 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a young male patient complaining of a head laceration after a trip and fall. The patient received basic life support measures on scene including trauma bandaging and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for evaluation and medical treatment.

Tuesday, July 13 At 10:22 p.m., Truck 105 responded on mutual aid assignment to a vehicle collision in the 1800 block of Mountain Avenue in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted the Monrovia Fire Department with extricating one patient who was trapped in a vehicle as a result of a two-vehicle traffic collision.

Thursday, July 15 At 8:03 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1400 block of South Fourth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a female patient experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene, including a 12-lead electrocardiogram. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for evaluation and medical treatment.

Friday, July 16 At 1:13 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, with units from the Los Angeles County and Monrovia Fire Departments, responded to a reported structure fire in the 800 block of Fairview Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found heavy smoke coming from the front of one unit in a multi-unit apartment complex. After further investigation, fire personnel found a room and contents fire in one unit. Firefighters extinguished, overhauled, ventilated, and investigated this fire. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to unattended ceremonial candles.

Saturday, July 17 At 11:30 a.m., Engine 105 responded to a reported electrical vault fire in the 100 block of Lubin Lane. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an underground vault whose lid had blown 10-feet away with heavy smoke coming from the vault. Fire personnel established a safety zone, requested Southern California Edison (SCE) respond to the scene, and remained on scene until their arrival. Numerous homes in the area were without electrical power for several hours while SCE made the necessary repairs.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 275 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
