Trash can fire at bus stop

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of June 20-26, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, June 20 At 10:25 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105 and Monrovia Truck 101 responded to a possible structure fire with a fire alarm activation in the 1100 block of Okoboji. Upon arrival, fire personnel found unattended food burning on the stove as the cause of the smoke. Fire personnel removed the burning food, ventilated the structure and secured the location prior to leaving the scene.

Monday, June 21 At 6:50 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported emergency medical assist in the 100 block of La Porte Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a middle-aged male with head trauma as the result of an assault. Fire personnel assessed, treated, and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, June 22 At 11:20 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical emergency in the 1300 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found one patient who had fallen and hit his head while working out. Fire personnel, assessed, treated, and transported this patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, June 23 At 12:43 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, and Battalion 105, provided automatic aid to the Monrovia Fire Department in response to a reported brush fire in the 900 block of Ridgeside Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a small vegetation fire in the brush interface in the city of Monrovia. Fire personnel assisted in extinguishment and overhaul of the fire.

Thursday, June 24 At 7:47 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a fire alarm activation in the 300 block of Genoa Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel were informed by the resident that water was leaking through the ceiling at the location. Fire personnel determined that the source of the water was a leaking fire sprinkler pipe in the ceiling. They assisted the homeowner by shutting off the water to the system and notifying a fire sprinkler company for repair.

Friday, June 25, 2010 At 2:10 p.m., personnel from Engine 106 manned Air Light Unit 106 and responded to a 2nd alarm structure fire in the City of Monterey Park. Upon arrival, fire personnel provided breathing air for Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) utilized by firefighters on scene. Fire personnel also assisted in overhaul of the fire scene.

Saturday, June 26 At 3:56 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a rubbish fire in the intersection of Huntington Drive and Sunset Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a smoldering trash can at a bus stop.  Fire personnel fully extinguished the fire and determined the fire was caused by hot coals that were dumped inside the trash can.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 455 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 14 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
