The center of what was to become the city of Arcadia was the Hotel Oakwood, a fashionable hotel built by Lucky Baldwin that opened for business on December 7, 1889. It was an instant success.
The two story brick building with thirty-five rooms, each having its own fireplace with hot and cold water, was nicely furnished. The Oakwood was the destination for both tourists and real estate promoters. It would accommodate the Tally-ho parties that left from Los Angeles on the “Orange Grove Route” to see the attractions of the San Gabriel Valley.
