The Burnell Oaks Estate

This estate, located almost directly across Foothill Blvd. from Clara’s estate, was built in 1910 by George Winship. (It is said that he won the property from Lucky Baldwin in a poker game.) His 14 bedroom, 9 bath home was designed by architect Arthur B. Benton, built of hand hewed redwood and contained no fireplaces. Winship was afraid of fire. George Edwin Burnell purchased the property in 1913 and used the mansion as a school. Burnell was the founder of the “New Thought” ministry and had a large following. He was a wealthy man, with extensive faming interests and was a developer of Auburn Park, a suburb of Chicago. The estate was demolished in 1969 to make way for the 210 freeway.
