Spring Plowing on Baldwin’s Ranch

Baldwin acquired adjoining ranches and merged them into the Santa Anita until he had about 54,000 acres. Parts of the ranch were planted in grain and alfalfa; wheat and barley were grown on acreage south of Sierra Madre. Large herds of cattle and sheep, plus 2,000 dairy cows, 500 horses and 500 mules required vast amounts of feed. A fair yield of grain was 28,000 sacks and alfalfa was 2,500 tons. A man with a double team of good work horses would have cost Baldwin $3 a day, and he needed a large number on a regular basis.
