Santa Anita Canyon Road

In 1931, twenty men were put to work clearing brush along the foothills above Arcadia in preparation for the construction of a road that would lead north into the Santa Anita canyon. Santa Anita Avenue would soon be a traveled highway for much mountain traffic. The road would be six to seven miles in length, ending at Chantry Flats, its recreational area and the private cabins situated in the canyon.

It is interesting to note that: “All work (would) be under the direction of the Los Angeles County Road Department and done by unemployed men from the communities of Arcadia, Sierra Madre and various unincorporated areas. When the road is completed, it is expected much mountain travel will pass through the city, and the road is to be a fine scenic drive.” … Arcadia Tribune, Friday, August 7. 1931.
