San Gabriel Valley Air Fields

With the advancement of aviation, ten private landing fields were developed in the San Gabriel Valley from Alhambra to Pomona.

Alhambra was one of the first to transport passengers, operate a flying school and begin U.S. Airmail service. The Monrovia Airport, also called the Foothill Flying Field, (1928-1953) was known as the “friendliest little airport in the country.” A mural in the business plaza on the north side of Huntington Drive at Shamrock in Monrovia commemorates the site.

Of those private landing fields in the San Gabriel Valley that operated in the 1920s, only San Gabriel Valley Airport (El Monte) and Brackett Field (La Verne) remain in operation today.
