Ross Field

Shortly after World War I was declared on April 6, 1917, the War Department negotiated with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for sites it needed for training camps. Lucky Baldwin’s old Santa Anita racetrack property seemed like a very good location. (Today, this is the Arcadia County Park and Santa Anita golf course.) Anita Baldwin had inherited the property, and she sold the 185 acres to the County for $92,000. The land was deeded to the War Department.
