Rally for teachers Tuesday

Concerned students and parents will stage “Wear Pink Day” rallies at each of the three Arcadia middle schools Tuesday (March 15) to express their concern over the state budget crisis and its effect on local schools and impending teacher layoffs.

Parents of Highland Oaks Elementary School will also stage a rally from the corner of Santa Anita and Virginia Avenues at 8 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. for seven teachers there who have received layoff notices.

With 105 teachers and staff receiving notification that their positions may be cut for in the 2011-2012 school year, parents and students will pass out fliers and hold signs on the sidewalks during student pick-ups, and 100 students at each middle school will wear pink shirts with “AEF $upport$ Our Schools.”

The goal is to educate more parents and community members about the crisis and how parents can show their support of Arcadia schools by donating to the Arcadia Educational Foundation (AEF).  to spread the message.

Here are the activities at each middle school:

  1. Dana Middle School (1401 S. First Ave.) – students will rally in the courtyard at 7:45 a.m., parents will line First Avenue and Santa Anita 2:30-3:00pm.  Contact person:  Lisa Brock, 626-353-0134.

  2. First Avenue Middle School (301 S. First Ave.) – students and parents will be on the sidewalks around the school, along California, Diamond, First and Santa Anita Avenues from 2:00-2:30pm.  Contact person: Vicky Stiles, 626-222-1078.

  3. Foothills Middle School (171 E. Sycamore Avenue, Arcadia) – rally will be on Sycamore 2:20-3:10pm.  Contact person: Lan Nguyen, 626-712-3295.

Additionally, high school and middle school students plan to attend the Arcadia City Council meeting on March 15 to further publicize the need to support Arcadia public schools during this state budget crisis.

Arcadia Educational Foundation was founded in 1981 as a non-profit organization and is operated by community volunteers in order to provide funding to enhance Arcadia Unified School District programs. AEF works in partnership with AUSD to identify high value funding opportunities in need of support and provides funding directly to the District to support those activities.
