Eighty-six years ago, on Thursday, February 26, 1931, a celebration was held at the Foothill Riding Club (today’s Arcadia Elks Lodge) to commemorate two extensions of Huntington Drive. The first, connecting with Huntington Drive west of Ross Field and the second, connecting with Colorado Street in the City of Pasadena.
From the official program: “The opening of the two Highways through the Baldwin Estate will rank as one of the greatest developments of new highways in the history of California. The initial step was taken in January 1925, by the organization of the Huntington Drive Improvement Association of Monrovia; after four years of co-operation with Arcadia and Duarte, Huntington Drive was completed and formally opened April 11, 1929. Meantime, great developments were made in widening and straightening, and building underpasses to the east; the widening of the bridge over the San Gabriel River came in natural sequence.
Recognition for time, work and money given in due to many officials, citizens, and property owners, without whom the great result celebrated upon this reception could not have been achieved. May they always be remembered with grateful praise.”
A banquet by the Arcadia Woman’s Club followed the toasts with music furnished by the White King Male Quartet and the Arcadian Club Orchestra.
