The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Oct. 18, 2009 through Oct. 24, 2009. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, October 18 At 10:26 a.m., Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulances 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a vehicle accident in the 00 block of West Foothill Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle in the center medium that had struck a tree. The patient had no medical complaints or signs of trauma but appeared to be confused. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, October 19 At 10:15 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported traffic collision in the intersection of West Live Oak Avenue and North Glickman. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle traffic collision involving a sheared fire hydrant as a result of a police pursuit. Fire personnel treated one male patient who refused additional treatment and was released to the Arcadia Police Department. The water to the fire hydrant was shut off at the nearby street valve.

Tuesday, October 20 At 8:50 p.m., Engine 106 responded to an odor of natural gas in the 300 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel determined the odor was actually from a skunk and not due to a natural gas leak.

Wednesday, October 21 At 11:38 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 107, and Battalion 105 responded with the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Fire Departments to a reported structure fire in the 1200 block of Wynn Road in the City of Pasadena. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large single story residential structure fully involved with fire. Arcadia Fire personnel assisted in extinguishment, Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC), treatment of two injured firefighters, and fire command. No Arcadia Fire personnel were injured at this fire.  The fire is under investigation by the Pasadena Fire Department.

Thursday, October 22 At 3:16 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a vehicle fire in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered the fire had been extinguished with a portable fire extinguisher by employees from a nearby business.  Fire personnel investigated the cause of the fire and confirmed the fire was completely extinguished.

Friday, October 23 At 5:23 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 00 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a fully involved vehicle next to a structure. Fire personnel extinguished the vehicle fire, preventing the fire from seriously damaging nearby structures. Minimal damage was sustained by the structure walls and roof. The structure was secured and released to the property manager.

Saturday, October 24 At 9:30 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance responded to a fall victim in the 100 block of East Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 90 year old male with a head injury, having fainted while taking part in an exercise class. Fire personnel treated the patient with advanced life support measures and transported him to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Training During the reporting period of October 18 to October 24, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 401 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period of October 18 to October 24, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week and assisted the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, performing administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau, as well as taking photos at the scenes of emergency incidents.   It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
