“Lucky” Baldwin and Jennie Dexter’s Wedding is Announced

On March 11, 1879, The San Francisco Alta printed the following:

” On Sunday evening a few personal friends of E. J. Baldwin, Esq. accompanied by the Grand Opera House Orchestra, serenaded that gentleman and his accomplished bride at their residence No. 1217 California Street. Prominent among the numerous guests were Sergeant Sharp, D. W. Lake and Alex McAbey.” It is interesting to note that not one of San Francisco’s high society members was mentioned as attending, such as William Ralston, Leland Stanford or James G. Fair. Would that have bothered Baldwin? Probably not, as he was as indifferent to social distinction as he was to public opinion. (Baldwin had been courting Jennie ever since his separation from his second wife, Mary Cochrane. The divorce from Mary cost Lucky one million dollars plus the Baldwin home at 410 Geary Street in San Francisco.)
