The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of June 27 – July 3, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, June 27 At 4:05 p.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Santa Anita. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient with an altered mental status, possibly from excessive alcohol consumption. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and medical treatment.

Monday, June 28 At 12:00 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of South Santa Anita Avenue and Bonita Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated one patient experiencing sternum and back pain. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital in full cervical precaution for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, June 29 At 4:20 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic accident with injuries in the intersection of Bonita Street and Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel treated one victim.  Fire personnel utilized full spinal precautions and transported the patient to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.


Wednesday, June 30 At 8:45 a.m., Engine 106 responded to a hazardous water condition in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a vehicle had struck a fire hydrant, shearing it from the water main and causing a large geyser of water. Fire personnel located the underground valve and shut off the flow of water to the fire hydrant. The scene was released to property management.

Thursday, July 1 At 11:39 a.m., Engine 106 responded to a report of an arcing wire in the 100 block of Bonita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered smoke and heat in the attic space of a two story apartment building. A full structure fire response was dispatched to assist with fire suppression by laddering the roof, accessing the attic space and shutting off the utilities to the building. Workers at the location had accidentally caused the fire in the main electrical panel of the structure.

Friday, July 2 At 10:38 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1000 block of La Ramada Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient suffering from an altered level of conciseness after a series of seizures. Paramedics witnessed the patient seize while on scene. The patient received advanced life support measures including medication to control seizure activity and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and medical treatment.


Saturday, July 3 At 3:36 p.m., Engine 105 was dispatched to a grass fire to the rear of a park in the 200 block of Bonita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a 30’ by 30’ grass fire burning on the hill behind the reported location on the railroad right of way.  Fire personnel extinguished and overhauled the fire utilizing Class A foam. The fire investigator determined the fire was intentionally set.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 539 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 20 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
