Four-car freeway wreck

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Nov. 1, 2009 through Nov. 7, 2009. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, November 1 At 9:09 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient with an altered level of consciousness. Advanced life support measures were provided on scene and the patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, November 3 At 10:55 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107 Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported electrical fire in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered that a small fire occurred in an electrical panel in the rear of the occupancy. Fire personnel checked for fire extension using a thermal imaging camera and removed the smoke from the structure utilizing positive pressure ventilation. Paramedics evaluated five patients complaining of nausea from the inhalation and odor of the smoke. All five patients refused further treatment or transport to the local hospital.

Wednesday, November 4 At 7:58 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported unconscious person in the 100 block of San Miguel Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a teenage male unconscious and unresponsive in the driveway of the residence. Fire personnel performed a thorough evaluation, administered approved medications, and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, November 6 * At 2:19 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 500 block of Gloria Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a female patient experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath. Advanced life support measures were provided on scene, including a 12 lead Electrocardiogram, and the patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

* At 6:33 p.m., Engine 105, with units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported traffic collision on the eastbound 210 freeway at Mountain Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found four vehicles involved in the collision with four patients. Fire personnel established a safe scene for the emergency workers, evaluated and treated all four patients, and transported them to area emergency rooms for further evaluation and treatment.

Saturday, November 7 At 4:24 p.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a hazardous condition in the 2000 block of Lee Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a strong odor of gasoline in the area. Upon investigation, personnel identified a vehicle that had sustained a ruptured gas tank. Fire personnel utilized eight bags of absorbent to soak up the spill and contain the leak, preventing the fuel from entering the storm drain. Los Angeles County Health Hazmat was requested to the scene to supervise the handling and disposal of contaminated absorbent in coordination with the vehicle owner.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 446 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period of November 1 to November 7, the Arcadia Fire Department had 1 hour of volunteer activities.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
