Fire sprinkler tree dedicated

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Nov. 8, 2009 through Nov. 14, 2009. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, November 8 At 4:08 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the 100 block of West Huntington Drive to a reported emergency medical assist. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an unconscious and unresponsive elderly female. Fire personnel assessed and evaluated the patient and determined she had a history of diabetes. Fire Paramedics administered a concentrated dose of Dextrose to the patient, who regained consciousness and was then able to respond to questions and commands.  The patient was transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, November 9 At 5:45 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 106, and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a vehicle accident on the eastbound 210 Freeway at the Michillinda Avenue on ramp.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a traffic collision involving three vehicles. Fire crews provided advanced life support to a patient complaining of shoulder trauma and dizziness.  The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. The scene was released to the California Highway Patrol for further investigation. 

Tuesday, November 10 At 5:35 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a vehicle accident in the intersection of South Baldwin Avenue and Woodruff Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated three patients experiencing neck and back pain, facial trauma, and dizziness.  Advanced life support measures were provided on scene, including a 12-lead electrocardiogram and full cervical spine precautions.  Two patients were transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. One patient refused further treatment or transport.

Friday, November 13 At 11:59 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to the 1000 block of Cyrus Lane to reported emergency medical assist. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an unconscious unresponsive one-year-old female infant in full cardiac arrest. Fire personnel utilized every advanced life support measure at their disposal and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further treatment.

On November 16, 2009 Fire Chief Tony Trabbie presented a formal letter of appreciation to Mr. Dave Link of the Link-Nilsen Corporation, a fire protection contractor located in Arcadia. The letter thanked Mr. Link for a donation of materials and labor in the construction of the Arcadia Fire Department’s Fire Sprinkler Save Tree.

The Sprinkler Save Tree is a visual display of fire sprinklers that have been activated during a fire and in the process saved both lives and property. A picture of the structure saved is placed adjacent to the activated fire sprinkler. The display is located in the administration offices of Fire Station No. 105.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 361 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period of November 1 to November 7, the Arcadia Fire Department had 2.5 hours of volunteer activities.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
