EXTENDED STAY CONVERSION to A Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center UPDATE

Earlier this year, the City Council and community reacted to the proposed conversion of the existing Extended Stay America hotel at 401 E. Santa Clara St. into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.
We have recently received word that CRI-HELP has withdrawn their proposal and that the property is back on the market. We have been approached by a different affordable housing developer, who is interested in converting the building into 100% affordable housing for seniors ages 62 and older. They are doing their due diligence and would seek State funding for their project. That application decision would be made around April 2027. If selected, the new developer would close escrow in Q4 2027 and begin remodeling in 2028. Their plan would be to reconfigure the property to give it more of a residential feel and make it look less like a traditional hotel. There is no guarantee on what will happen at the site, and we have no application to react to at this point. I’m merely mentioning this given the community’s previous interest in the conversion of this property. We will let you know if we receive
any applications on this site.
