Duarte Road, 1928

Corporal Andres Duarte was granted 7,000 acres of land in 1841 and he named it “Rancho Azusa de Duarte.” (The name “Azusa” was derived from “Asuksa-nga,” the name the Native Americans called their village.) The trail Duarte and his family frequently took west to the Mission San Gabriel became well traveled by others and became the first most heavily traveled route in the region. It was known as “The Mission Road” and “County Road” until renamed Duarte Road sometime after Arcadia’s incorporation.

This photo was taken in 1928 of Duarte Road, east of Baldwin Avenue, showing the favorite architecture style of the homes at the time.
