COUNTY TO MAKE A STRONG STANCE ON HOMELESSNESS AFTER GRANTS PASS

Last week, Supervisor Solis submitted a motion to the Board that would “Clarify that Los Angeles County jails will not be used to hold people arrested due to enforcement of anti-camping ordinances” in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Grants Pass case, which allows cities to fully enforce anti-camping ordinances. The motion stresses the importance of a “care first” approach by providing services and shelter options. Like the County, Arcadia intends to take a “care first” approach to addressing homelessness; however, we also intend to enforce our anti-camping laws when needed.

Therefore, we are submitting comments to Supervisor Barger to that effect so she can consider them when the Board discusses this on Thursday. We have also submitted comments to the SGVCOG to be included in their overall discussion on this topic. While we hope the County will not turn us away when looking to book people in the County Jails, we are also prepared to house folks in our City jail if needed.
