Car in flames near gas pumps

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Aug. 1-7, 2010. The following is a breakdown of incident types for this time period:

Sunday, August 1 At 5:17 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a vehicle fire in the 00 block of West Foothill Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a passenger vehicle fully engulfed in fire near a fuel pump and under the canopy of the service station. Fire personnel extinguished and overhauled the fire with no damage to the fuel pump or structure. Fire personnel utilized absorbent to clean up a fuel leak, which developed from the vehicle as a result of the fire. Los Angeles County Health Hazmat was requested to the location to advise the owner on the proper disposal of the contaminated absorbent. The cause of the fire was a gasoline leak to the heated engine block area.

Monday, August 2 At 7:56 a.m., Engine 105 and Truck 105 responded to a public assist in the 300 block of South First Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a person trapped in an elevator. Fire personnel utilized elevator extrication tools to trigger the elevator doors to open. The victim was removed unharmed. Maintenance crews on site made contact with the elevator technicians for repairs.

Tuesday, August 3 At 12:14 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an emergency medical assist in the 800 block of Kingsley Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male sitting upright in a chair with slurred speech and right sided weakness. Fire personnel, treated the patient with advanced life support and transported him to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, August 4 At 5:35 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision with injuries in the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue and Live Oak Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a two-vehicle traffic collision with one patient requiring medical assistance. The injured driver was treated with advanced life support measures and transported to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, August 5 At 10:01 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a reported fire sprinkler activation in the 700 block of West Camino Real. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a three-story retirement hotel with alarm bells ringing. Following further investigation fire personnel found a fire sprinkler activation in one room on the second floor. Although no fire activity was detected, fire personnel spent 90 minutes removing water from 13 rooms and two hallways on the first and second floors using various water removal equipment and techniques. The broken sprinkler head was replaced and the fire sprinkler system was restored to full operation.

Friday, August 6 At 10:25 a.m., Truck 105 and Engine 107 responded on an automatic aid assignment to a structure fire in the 400 block of Shamrock Ave in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted the Monrovia Fire Department with vertical ventilation of the structure and fire suppression activities.

Saturday, August 7 At 2:09 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a power line down in the 2200 block of Third Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a tree branch had fallen on a structure. The branch damaged the phone and cable lines and came to rest on the electrical service drop to the structure. Fire personnel contacted Southern California Edison to respond to the location to abate the hazard and determine if the service drop was damaged.

Training During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 350 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 10 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the department with administrative duties at the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
