Captain Jerry Lee Broadwell, Fallen Firefighter

The first firefighter to give his life fighting a fire in Arcadia was Jerry Lee Broadwell.  He died on August 22, 1975 of burns received when the roof of a burning building collapsed at 333 North Santa Anita Avenue.

The Children’s Reading Room at the Arcadia Public Library is dedicated to his memory as well as a plaque built into a wall at Fire Station 105.  The Arcadia Firefighter’s Association has established an annual scholarship in his name. Recipients of the scholarship are driven to their graduation ceremonies in the Association’s antique 1926 La France fire engine.
