The State of California is reimposing an indoor mask mandate for all individuals regardless of vaccination status. The 30-day order goes into effect on Wednesday, December 15, and is set to expire on January 15, but may be extended. The order comes as coronavirus case rates in California have risen by almost 50% in the last few weeks, and COVID-19 related hospitalizations are up by nearly 15%. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranks California as having a high level of transmission of the coronavirus, the worst tier in the federal agency's four-tier scale.
