Baldwin & the SPCA

In March 1905, Baldwin announced that he would be holding dog and rabbit races on his ranch property. These races had been held in the Los Angeles area and were very popular despite many court rulings of animal cruelty.

Baldwin’s venture into the dog and rabbit racing lasted about a month. A brawl erupted at the course when an attempt was made to stop the activity. Baldwin and other officials were arrested on animal cruelty charges brought by the SPCA. The case lay dormant for a while, but in time, all charges were dropped. Races were held once or twice before the district attorney’s office took up the fight and ended the activity permanently.
