Arcadia’s First Drive – In Market – 1929

On the southwest corner of First Avenue and Huntington Drive, one of the country’s first drive-in markets was opened in 1929.

It was arranged in an “L” shape with seven businesses and a gas station at the corner. From First Avenue came Arcadia Cleaners, Danish Bakery, Arcadia Produce, Tucker’s Meat Market, Quality Grocery, Otto Petersen’s Pines Coffee Shop and last on Huntington Drive, O.F. Wakeland’s barber shop.

Off street parking was adequate and convenient. It was a favorite shopping area for Arcadia residents into the early 1950s.
