Arcadia: A Boxing Mecca?

Following Arcadia’s incorporation in 1903, the Oakwood became the center for Arcadia’s city business as well as a center for the sporting crowd. Slot machines and roulette wheels were placed in the hotel lobby and a boxing ring was installed behind the hotel.

Boxing promoters had their eyes on Baldwin’s Arcadia for their expansion of the sport. California was a state that permitted boxing matches and San Francisco was its center. In Arcadia, “reformers” were not likely to interfere with fighting arrangements because “Lucky Baldwin is boss and what he says goes.”

Boxing exhibitions were popular on Sunday afternoons at the Oakwood.
