Anita May Baldwin was born on January 10, 1876, daughter of Jane Virginia (Jennie) Dexter Baldwin (18) and E. J. “Lucky” Baldwin (53). Baldwin brought the infant and mother to his newly completed Baldwin Hotel in San Francisco to make it their home. Jennie died on November 16, 1881, at the hotel, leaving five year old Anita to be raised by her father protected from his sporting life and away from her flamboyant half sister, Clara.
Anita was a shy and retiring child, though determined and defiant in pursuing her own interests.
She eloped twice without her father’s approval: at sixteen with her second cousin, George Baldwin, and at twenty-four with Hull McClaughry.
