Anita Baldwin’s Unusual Purchase

Anita Baldwin purchased the entire collection of shrubs and decorative plants of the New York State building at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco in November 1915.

Mrs. Baldwin outbid six large estate owners, and she said she “got a bargain.” She added that it would have been impossible to have secured such a fine collection in any other way.

Bay trees, pines, evergreens and a great variety of foliage plants were in the collection. Six gardeners would arrive from her ranch to pack the collections into four express cars for transportation to her estate “Anoakia” in Santa Anita, California.
