A City Hall is completed in Arcadia

In 1917, plans for a city hall were formulated, completed and accepted in November 1917. Originally the building was to be built on a plot of ground located at Huntington Drive and Second Avenue, which the city owned. An offer of three lots on the northeast corner of Huntington and First Avenue was extended for a low price of $1600.

The more desirable location was deemed worth the change, the price was right and the purchase was made. The cost of the building was given at $15,000. With some luck, it was found that a portion of unused funds from the city’s street bond account was available. The $18,000 actual cost of the building posed no problem.

The completed building was a two-story brick colonial with ten thousand square feet, located in the center of the city’s business district and was dedicated with an opening celebration on July 13, 1918. It served the city for thirty years.
