1929 Los Angeles County Regional Plan for Development

A plan for the development of the San Gabriel Valley was published in 1929 by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission. In it were projected estimates of growth in each of the seventeen incorporated cities in the valley. Arcadia was expected to become the third largest in population with 150,000 following Pasadena and Pomona.

The Commission also believed that Arcadia would become an important center of the county’s surface traffic. Six major east-west highways (Orange Grove, Foothill, Colorado-Huntington, Duarte Road, Longden and Las Tunas) were envisioned as well as two north-south highways (Baldwin and Santa Anita).

Out of eighteen airports contemplated for the valley, Arcadia was selected to be the second largest. If the projections had been on target, Arcadia would have been a far different community.
