Sergeant speaks to students

Sergeant First Class Anthony Abeyta will address students of Longley Way Elementary School at 8:45 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, about the importance of “being thankful and caring” — the theme of the school’s Service Learning Project — and how it relates to him personally and in his career as a soldier.

The appearance of Sergeant Abeyta, husband of Arcadia school district administrative assistant Rachel Abeyta, will be part of Longley Way’s celebration of the student Integrity Award winners.

Paula Cornell from “For the Troops,” an organization that packages and mails Care Packages to the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, will be on hand to accept donated items collected from parents, students and staff during a collection drive this past month. She will also collect personal letters of gratitude written by students to military members currently deployed.

Students also created stars with the name of their family members or friends who are currently serving or have served in the military. Those stars will become part of Longley Way’s Wall of Honor.
