Miller state baton champ

Kelsey Miller, an 11-year-old sixth-grader at First Avenue Middle School, is the 2010 California state 2-baton Champion after having won first place in the 2010 NBTA California State Twirling Championships on Nov. 22 at Long Beach City College.

Her triumph came on the same weekend as she marched with her school in the Arcadia Festival of Bands on Nov. 21.

Miller’s mother Shana Miller is a substitute teacher at Baldwin-Stocker Elementary School in Arcadia. She says Kelsey started twirling when she was just 5-years-old when Shana signed her up for classes at the local Arcadia Community Center. She was subsequently invited to be on a baton team, loved it, and began twirling competitively at the age of six, practicing several hours a day.

She takes lessons from her coach Shari Taylor who lives in Hesperia, CA. and meets the Millers in Chino Hills on the weekends for lessons that run from 90-minutes – two-hours.

Kelsey is currently a member of the California Twirling Institute Dance Twirl Team, which has won Nationally 4 years in a row.

Shana says First Avenue’s Mr. Danielson was kind enough to take on a majorette for the marching band and that Kelsey is currently the only twirler out of all three middle schools, “so it is definitely a very special honor to have the chance to represent her school!”
