Metro ExpressLanes Update (Clean Air Vehicles and Channelizers)

This is a friendly reminder that Metro ExpressLanes is making changes to its Clean Air Vehicle Policy starting March 1, 2019:

Customers with a clean air vehicle (CAV) displaying a valid DMV-issued red or purple CAV decal are eligible for a 15% discount off of the posted rate on the I-10 and I-110 Metro ExpressLanes. To qualify, eligible CAV decal holders must first register for the discount on our website at metro.net/expresslanes/cav.

All clean air vehicles must set the switch on their FasTrak Flex transponder to indicate the number of people in the vehicle for any given trip. CAVs are no longer allowed to use the 2 or 3+ transponder switch settings unless that many persons are present in the vehicle. Clean Air Vehicles with incorrect switch settings may be subject to CHP enforcement. As a courtesy to our customers and to allow additional time for eligible CAVs to register, CHP will not be issuing citations regarding this policy during the month of March.  Additionally, per recent Metro Board direction, we are extending the enforcement grace period to May 31, 2019 during which time CHP may provide warnings regarding this policy. CHP will issue citations related to CAVs beginning in June 2019.

Other CAV vehicles (including those with yellow, green or white CAV decals) will not be eligible to receive any CAV discounts.

Channelizers coming to the I-10 Metro ExpressLanes:

Channelizer installation will begin early March pending weather conditions. Installation will take place around the I-710 interchange in both directions. During installation, the overhead sign may display a “CLOSED TO ALL” message. No one may enter or use the lane. Any driver who enters the lanes after the lanes are closed will be charged the maximum toll for the full corridor, even if the driver did not travel the full length of the corridor. Channelizers are being installed between the ExpressLanes and general purpose lanes in areas that have a high occurrence of vehicles illegally crossing the double-white solid pavement markings creating a physical separation between the lanes to improve safety, ease congestion and reduce travel times.

Channelizer update on the I-110 Metro ExpressLanes:

Channelizers were installed on the I-110 ExpressLanes in 2018 to prevent illegal crossing of the double white lines. These traffic control devices were installed per manufacturer specifications; however, the devices were unreliable. Metro has procured a different product and is working to install new channelizers later this year after Caltrans completes the resurfacing project on the I-110 corridor.
