At the all-day Goal Setting session on March 15, the City Council directed staff to explore the use of various technologies to better meet the community’s language
access needs—shifting away from traditional professional translation services, which tend to be more costly and time-
consuming to coordinate. During the discussion, Council Member Cheng emphasized the importance of signage at
front counters to demonstrate our ability to provide service in multiple languages. Shown here is a sample of the signage
that has been put in place, which invites customers to indicate the language they need assistance with by pointing to the relevant section of the sign. A QR code has also been
added to the sign, enabling immediate communication via Google Translate. In addition to this signage, we will continue to assist customers at front counters through bilingual staff
and phone interpretation services in order to keep meeting our language access goals in a variety of ways.
