JOCKEY QUOTES
RAFAEL BEJARANO, THEONEWEWAITEDFOR, WINNER: “I knew my filly would be up close, especially after the seven was scratched late. I knew there were only two horses in the race after that, Love a Honeybadger and Cioppino Pasadino. When I saw Love a Honeybadger break slow, I just dropped in behind Cioppino Pasadino on the lead. Flavien (Prat, on favored Miss Southern Miss) moved a little early and tried to go by me but I just kept waiting and waiting and my filly was good enough to hold on and win. “She’s been training so well and she seems like a real professional so we’ll play it by ear and see what happens.”
FLAVIEN PRAT, MISS SOUTHERN MISS, SECOND: “She broke a little slow. She grabbed the bit a little on the backside and I thought I was on the best horse, but she just wasn’t herself today.”
TRAINER QUOTES
MIKE HARRINGTON, THEONEWEWAITED FOR, WINNER: “I’m speechless. It’s very special seeing a daughter of Creative Cause winning. His first baby won a stakes too, which puts him on the map, and it’s so nice to see it all come to fruition. “Ironically she lived up to her name. I named her and when I did I told the owner, this is ‘the one we’ve waited for.’ She’s always been the best filly in the barn. “She’s definitely not a sprinter. Her dad ran a mile and a quarter (in the 2012 Kentucky Derby in which he finished fifth, and was subsequently third in the Preakness before being retired), her mother ran a mile and an eighth so there’s no reason why she won’t go long.”
Notes: The winning owner/breeder is Heinz H. Steinmann of Wrightwood, CA.
