Update with detour map, Aug. 4, 8:30 a.m.: Huntington Drive is scheduled to be completely closed off to all traffic at Second Avenue for four days starting this Friday, Aug. 8. And Second Avenue will be closed off entirely overnight Sundays-Thursdays for an additional six weeks thereafter.
The announcement of the exact timing of the major shutdown was dependent on the arrival of a large steel bridge girder being transported to Arcadia from the Port of Long Beach but it is now confirmed that the full closure of the intersection to install the bridge girder will begin at midnight Friday, August 8 and continue through Tuesday, August 12 (at 6 AM). Drivers at the intersection of Second Avenue at Huntington Drive got a little respite this past weekend (Aug. 1-3) from lane closures the last two weeks before the mother of impediments hits next weekend. Second Avenue has been fully closed overnight at the intersection and westbound lanes of Huntington Drive have been closed while work continues on preparing for the addition of a second bridge for the coming Gold Line light rail line to lay side-by-side with the existing bridge.
Metro Gold Line Contruction Authority officials anticipate an additional six-weeks of one-way, directional nighttime closures of Huntington Drive with no thru traffic on Second Ave, Sundays through Thursdays only. Work hours are 8 PM – 6 AM during these nighttime activities, during which the smaller cross beams and deck steel will be installed. No work will be performed on Friday and Saturday evenings, so traffic will not be impacted on those nights.

Traffic will be detoured and signage will be posted to direct motorists and pedestrians (see detour map below) Beginning Tuesday night, August 12, 2014 for approximately six weeks, Sundays thru Thursdays ONLY, from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.: Huntington Dr will be closed to thru-traffic at Second Ave in either eastbound or westbound direction (never concurrently), while no thru-traffic will be allowed on Second Ave at Huntington Dr. These closures are needed to install the cross beams and deck steel. Traffic will be detoured and signage will be posted to direct motorists and pedestrians during these hours. No work will be performed on Fridays or Saturdays.
