Beverly Street’s dual honors

Longtime Arcadian and ubiquitous volunteer Beverly Street was honored twice within 24-hours this week for more than 40 years of selfless contributions to the community.

Beverly was selected as the 2010 City of Arcadia Senior Citizen of the Year, for which she was recognized at the annual Salute to Seniors luncheon sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club at the Arcadia Community Center on Tuesday, May 11.

Amidst a crowd of 225 attendees, Beverly, who was nominated by the Arcadia Historical Museum, was honored by Rotarians, the City Council, Senior Commissioners and other guests, with Mayor Peter Amundson presenting Beverly with a plaque from the City and presented a proclamation designating May as senior citizens month.

Mary Salcedo and Tony Parille were the Masters of Ceremonies for the event. John Destry entertained with his rendition of Dean Martin with the show, “Good Days with Dean.”  There were 225 people in attendance for the celebration.

A day earlier on Monday, May 10, Beverly was honored at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles as part of the 45th Annual Older Americans Recognition Day Awards Program sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults (LACCOA). Beverly will be accompanied to the Music Center by Arcadia Historical Society president Ruth Dunlop (who put Beverly’s name in nomination), Dan Belling (Recreation Supervisor) and her husband Ron Street. Bev and Ron have lived in Arcadia for 45 years.

A teacher for 33 years at Emma W Shuey School in Rosemead Elementary District, Beverly’s volunteer work began in the late 1960’s and continues to this day. Through the years she has been active in PTA, Boy Scouts, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, San Gabriel Valley Panhellenic, Las Alas (Assistance League)  Olympic Volunteer and Sister City Commissioner (she represented Arcadia in Tripolis Greece and even gave a speech in Greek).Currently, she is the President of The Friends of the Arcadia Historical Museum and she is Co-Chair of the Preservation Historical Committee of the L.A. County Arboretum. She is also actively involved with the Arboretum’s Los Voluntarios, Creative Arts Alliance and continues to be involved in Las Alas, Panhellenic, KKG and Special Olympics.  She is a member of the Rosemead Education Foundation.Beverly and Ron, who moved to Arcadia in 1965, are pleased that their sons, Dave and Deron, were raised in the community, and Beverly says they have been blessed with three wonderful grandchildren, Trevor, Emily and Connor.

They are also grateful for so many friendships that have enriched their lives.
