210-freeway closed

Once again this week and next Sunday through Thursday nights. Sept. 29, the eastbound lanes of the 210 Foothill Freeway will be closed starting at 11  p.m. and re-open by 5 a.m. the following morning. This is still due to work on the “iconic bridge” that will carry the Gold Line foothill extension of the light rail line over the eastbound lanes and along a new route of more than 11 miles from Pasadena to Asuza when it opens in 2016.

The freeway will be closed to eastbound traffic between Baldwin Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue, with traffic being detoured to Foothill Boulevard. To avoid delays, use of alternate routes like the eastbound I-10 San Bernardino Freeway are suggested.

The formwork and falsework is being removed, and the architectural elements designed into the superstructure by artist Andrew Leicester are starting to be revealed. As the falsework is removed in late September through early October, up to 20 nights of consecutive late night closures of the eastbound I-210 Freeway are planned.

Meanwhile, plans are being put in place to continue the line from Asuza to the County border at Montclair/Claremont. A draft of the proposed Environmental Impact Report on that section was released by the Metro Construction Authority on August 21. The Draft EIR evaluates the impacts of the proposed 12.3-mile light rail extension, which includes six new stations (Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont and Montclair) and two new grade-separated crossings (at Lone Hill in Glendora and Towne Avenue in Pomona). The proposed extension is planned to run mostly at street level and parking is planned at each station. The Draft EIR is circulating for a 45-day review period.

Two public meetings are scheduled to receive comments on the issues raised in the Draft EIR, and the document’s accuracy and completeness.

* 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 20 Montclair Senior Center 5111 Benito Street Montclair, CA 91763

* 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 Hillcrest Meeting House 2705 Mountain View Drive La Verne, CA 91750

Comments must be received by the October 5. The Draft EIR and details about where to send comments can be found at the Construction Authority’s website – www.foothillextension.org.
