Arcadia will finally get its first IMAX theater in December.
Sort of.
A year ago, in December 2007, AMC Entertainment and IMAX Corp. announced a joint venture deal to install 100 IMAX® digital projection systems at AMC locations in 33 major U.S. markets. One of the first 50 targeted for the installation is the AMC Santa Anita 16 at the Westfield Santa Anita mall.

The theatres feature IMAX’s digital projection system which is being developed for the IMAX MPX® theatre design.
What that means is that this will not be a conventional IMAX theater as you may have seen at museums, tourist attractions, or as stand-alone theaters near other conventional cinemas, where non-reclining seats are placed at an extreme angle and the screen is anywhere from 50-feet to 90-feet tall and about 70-feet wide.
Rather, the existing AMC Santa Anita 16 auditorium #8 with stadium seating is being reconfigured to seat 225 people and feature a screen that is 25% larger than the current screen and repositioned by IMAX for optimum viewing, according to a spokesman for Kansas City, Mo.-based AMC. IMAX is also creating custom sound systems based on the dynamics of that auditorium and will install all new digital projection equipment, eliminating the need for film and allowing for the display of special concerts and operas, mainstream movies in special larger IMAX presentation, and 3-D movies such as the upcoming Deep Sea-quel 3D (working title, February 2009), Monsters vs. Aliens 3D (March 2009), How to Train Your Dragon 3D (November 2009), Hubble 3D (working title, February 2010) and Shrek Goes Forth 3D (May 2010).
Although the companies had hoped to introduce the new system and theater in time for the Nov. 7 debut of the computer-animated Madagascar 2, a few unanticipated logistical hurdles have delayed the opening until at least December, perhaps in time to present the premiere of the high-profile holiday release remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.
