The following is a sample of emergency calls responded to during the designated week:
Sunday, October 19
*Â At 8:10 a.m., Rescue Ambulance 105 assisted Pasadena Fire on a multi-victim, multi-vehicle accident on the Westbound 210 Freeway at Madre Avenue. Fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was extricated from a vehicle experiencing blunt chest trauma and rib pain. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Tuesday, October 21
* At 4:25 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to medical assist in the 800 block of West Duarte Road. Fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was complaining of severe abdominal pain. The patient was placed on oxygen and received fluids intravenously. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Wednesday, October 22
* At 11:00 a.m., the Arcadia Fire Department was presented with a check for $5,000 from Fireman’s Fund Insurance and Arroyo Insurance. The Arcadia Fire Department will purchase one Carbon Monoxide Monitor and three Pediatric Backboards with these funds. The award of this grant will benefit the Arcadia Fire Department as well as the entire community for many years.
Thursday, October 23
*Â At 3:47 p.m., Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion Chief 105 responded to vehicle accident at the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue and Huntington Drive. Fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was extricated from the vehicle complaining of neck and back pain. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Friday, October 24
*Â At 8:18 a. m., Engine 107, Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with Monrovia Fire units, responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Haven Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews found light smoke coming from the roofline of a residential structure. Fire personnel forced entry from an unlocked window and found unattended food on the stove. The pot containing the burnt food was removed from the house and extinguished, smoke removal equipment was used to remove the smoke and the structure was checked for fire extension and secured.
Saturday, October 25
*Â At 3:36 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision involving an auto and a Southern California Edison pole. The driver of the vehicle struck and knocked down the pole in the 1200 block of South Second Ave. The driver refused medical treatment from the Department and E105 remained on scene and secured the area until Edison arrived.
Breeders Cup at Santa Anita Race Track
The Arcadia Fire Department provided additional fire and life safety protection for the Breeder’s Cup which was held at the Santa Anita Race Track on October 24 – 25, 2008. During the two day event, the Department provided two Chief Officers, Engine 705, Rescue Ambulance 706, and it’s Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Trailer. The WMD Trailer is a highly specialized unit that carries equipment that is capable of detecting chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons, additionally, it carries equipment capable of decontaminating a large number of civilians in the event they become contaminated with WMD products. Through the Area C Unified Response Plan, the Burbank Fire Department provided Hazardous Material Squad 12 to assist the Department at the event as well. Haz-Mat 12 specializes in the detection and classification of all types of hazardous materials, and in the event of a hazardous materials release, the mitigation and safe conclusion of the event.

On Wednesday, FPB staff performed a walkthrough of the Santa Anita Race Track in preparation for the upcoming Breeder’s Cup event. Some items reviewed included temporary bleachers, tents, and viewing platforms.
Public Education
During the reporting period the Arcadia Fire Department conducted three public education demonstrations and one fire station tour.
Training
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 426 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.
Volunteer Weekly Activity Report
During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 7.5 hours of volunteer activities. Specifically, volunteers from the community contributed their valuable time last week in assisting the department with processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports, taking photos at the scene of an emergency incident and a special event, restoring old department photos for historical preservation and archival purpose. It is worth noting that all volunteers and department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
